SRI LANKA – Visit 5-14
January 2005 (2)

Batticaloa: Gordon and Ruth talking
to fishermen, who described the four waves that come in on top of each other.
This fisherman lost 20 family members, his home, boat and nets. He was left with
only the clothes he was wearing. |

Hambantota: some fishermen are having difficulty selling their fish, because of
beliefs that the sea may have been angry due to overfishing, as well as fears
the fish may be contaminated by bodies. |

Batticaloa: these areas were full of
houses |

Point Pedro, Jaffna – water well contaminated with sand, seawater and sewage.
Many people who survived the tsunami have died from drinking unclean water.
Coastal farmland has also been rendered unusable by sand and salt contamination. |

Clive and Ruth meet Martin Bell, former journalist and Member of Parliament,
who now works as an ambassador for UNICEF. |

Batticaloa – We praise the Lord that Zion Church House of Prayer remained intact
despite inundation – the only building left undamaged in the village – the
church members are firm in their faith that the Lord protected their church.
"Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him. He alone
is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I shall not be shaken. My
salvation and my honour depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge." (Psalm
62 v 5-7 NIV) |
