On this page:   Doubleday Educational Complex  /  New well for school  /  Sea container for Ghana

Clive first visited Ghana in 1995 with a group of fellow Baptist ministers from London, spending the week preaching at Buokrom Baptist Church, Kumasi, and made good friends with Pastor Albert Donkor. On his return to the UK, Clive helped the church to gain funds to finish the roof, and encouraged them to start a pre-school in the church building during the week.

DOUBLEDAY EDUCATIONAL COMPLEX

Some of Pastor Albert's church members working in London re-established contact with Clive in 2006 and Clive was surprised to learn that the pre-school, which had now grown to become a day school, had been named The Doubleday Educational Complex, following the African tradition of honouring those who contribute towards the establishing of a project.

Clive subsequently helped secure funding from Mission Care to expand the school buildings and toilet block so that more children can be educated, and this work is in progress at present. The ground floor of the extension is completed and is in use, but the upper floor is unfinished.

The following items are still in need of funding in order to complete the project:

  • £5,000 to finish the upper floor with flooring, windows, electricity and plumbing

  • £1,000 for school furniture for the upper floor – chairs, desks and blackboard

  • £5,000 to purchase a school minibus

NEW WELL FOR SCHOOL

In 2007 Smile supporter Graeme Thompson went out to Ghana to research possible projects for Smile. He found that the children at the Doubleday Educational Complex had to walk 2 miles to obtain water, crossing a very precarious and unsafe bridge each time. On his return he was able to raise the £3,000 necessary to sink a new well at the school, through the generosity of his friends and church. In July 2008 he returned to deliver the finance and oversee the sinking of the well and installation of the electric pump and water tower.

SEA CONTAINER FOR GHANA

Smile has sent out a sea container of supplies – clothes, shoes, toys, sewing machines, computers and study supplies. The aid went to Pastor Albert Donkor's school children, and students at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Kumasi. This is our first shipment to Ghana and we look forward to expanding Smile's work to support and help those in need in this country.
