BENEFITS OF TWINNING

Practical help
School twinning can play an important part in helping to make a difference to children in disadvantaged parts of the world, struggling to overcome great poverty and unimaginable hardships. Interest and support raised in the UK enables more children to have an education, giving them a brighter future and helping them become self-sufficient and well-educated citizens.

Educational value
The partnership teaches children in both schools about the wider world and helps them broaden their horizons, bringing current affairs to life. It can improve literacy and promote understanding of diversity, making the curriculum much more interesting. Through these long-term links, children in both schools gain an educational awareness of their different countries, cultures and needs.

Mutual understanding
Children have the opportunity to learn of the varied situations and experiences of children around the world, giving them a global awareness and a sense of responsibility that will remain with them in their future careers and lives.

Smile International’s school twinning programme operates in Africa, Asia and Europe.

WHAT YOUR SCHOOL CAN DO

Contact
Your school can correspond by letter and/or email, in the process providing encouragement to the children and teachers, who are often working with very limited resources.

Fund raising
You can hold fund-raising events, such as non uniform days, arts and crafts stalls, cake sales, dance marathons, fashion shows, fun runs, read-a-thons, quizzes and other creative sponsored events. Money raised from these events goes towards supporting your twinned school.

Many schools are without basic supplies and in some countries the children are inadequately fed. You can target your fund raising to your sponsored school’s particular needs, such as a water supply, feeding, school bags filled with supplies or school equipment. The funds will then be used to purchase these items locally.

Shoeboxes
Your school can take part in our Sponsor a Shoebox programme. Smile then arranges for the gifts to be purchased locally and put into suitable boxes or baskets. This avoids transportation costs and import taxes, and ensures that the gifts are suitable to the culture concerned. Each box costs approximately £5 to fill.

Visits
Staff members may visit your twinned school, so that you can see first-hand the difference your help is making, as well as strengthen the friendships already made

It is a requirement that all visits are organised through Smile International and, in the interests of child protection, no independent visits are permitted.
