MAKE A DIFFERENCE TODAY

Orphan in Uganda
You can help a child for less than the cost of a daily newspaper

Sponsoring a child is an exciting and rewarding partnership between you the sponsor and your sponsored child. The knowledge that you are providing food for your child, an education to give them hope for the future and the opportunity to grow in a caring and spiritual environment is rewarding enough, but for your sponsored child, it is more than this – it is knowing that someone, somewhere, cares for them.

We believe that this knowledge has a far-reaching effect on the child’s life and attitude to society, and that sponsorship makes a valuable contribution to the quality of their communities in the future. Your donation of £15 or £20 per month will make an enormous difference, so please sponsor today.

Our Sponsor A Child scheme supports children through to the end of their secondary education.

Our leaflet includes a sponsorship form.

WHY THEY NEED YOUR HELP

Did you know that poverty kills 1 child every 3 seconds? Many of the children in our child sponsorship programme are AIDS orphans or come from families suffering poverty and illness, unable to support and care for their children.

Smile International provides the children with food, education, health and spiritual care, sport and recreation activities, and operates regardless of a child’s religion, race, ethnicity or gender.

Smile International works with local partners in developing countries but also has its own Smile Centre in Sri Lanka, where children are provided with pre-school education, lunch, after-school care and recreational activities. The children also learn income-generating skills as they get older, which helps them become self-sufficient as they approach adulthood.

Sri Lanka – Children from the slums attending the Smile Centre, Hambantota

We have two levels of sponsorship:.

  • £15 per month (approx 50p a day) – provides food, education, pastoral care and basic health care

  • £20 per month (approx 67p a day) – benefits your child's family or community through long-term development projects

To become a sponsor simply complete the form and return it to the Smile office. As a sponsor you will receive:

  • A photo

  • A short biography

  • Information about their country

  • Communication from your child

  • The opportunity to visit your child through Smile Step Out trips

Individuals, school classes, clubs and churches can sponsor a child, taking them out of the poverty cycle and providing hope for the future. If you are more than one individual sponsoring a child, please send one payment on behalf of the group and allocate one person to write for the group.

FEEDING PROGRAMME

It is a staggering figure, but there are approximately 300 million chronically under-nourished children in the world. Whilst Smile International cannot help everyone, we can at least help some. We operate feeding programmes in Africa and Asia.

In Zimbabwe, for example, we provide schools with food as there is not enough at home and most schools in developing countries do not have the facilities to provide school meals.

Apart from the effect of constant hunger on their health and comfort, under-fed children are easily distracted and usually have problems concentrating on their lessons, so this impedes a child’s ability to learn and achieve. When food is available at school, a child’s performance increases significantly.
