Smile has been working in Sri Lanka since the 2004 tsunami. In the immediate aftermath Smile sent a 40-ton truckload of humanitarian aid, toys and shoeboxes by air and a further seven sea containers of aid which were distributed to affected communities in Tangalle, Hambantota, Batticaloa and Jaffna. Working with local church leaders we sent out a medical team and began to help the local communities to recover. Our ministry teams helped to clear rubble and erect emergency tents. We bought new fishing boats for men who had lost their livelihood. We also sponsored a counsellor to help to train 25 teachers in trauma counselling to help children to overcome their bereavement and fear of the sea.

We would like to thank everyone who has helped us respond to the tsunami crisis in Sri Lanka, through prayer, donations of aid and finance.

REFUGEES IN BATTICALOA

Smile is feeding refugees in Batticaloa, Eastern Sri Lanka, where we first helped immediately after the tsunami in 2005. There has been ongoing fighting between internal factions of the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan Government. Many people have been left homeless and without food or shelter.

Pastor Roshan refuses to flee the area but has opened the church building as a safe haven and refuge for those in need. If you or your church are able to support Pastor Roshan's relief effort at this time, he will be extremely grateful.

Donations of finance will enable relief supplies to be purchased locally – this is the fastest and most economical way to help these people in their great and urgent need.

Donations should be made to Smile International marked "Batticaloa refugees". Please see our Donations page for details on how to give online, by telephone, email or post.

Distribution of supplies to Batticaloa refugees
Distribution of dry ration pack (which contains 10kg rice, 4kg sugar, ½kg tea leaves, 1kg dhal, 400gm milk powder, sanitary pad, soap, salmon, 100gm chilli powder) to 165 families from three of Pastor Roshan's Branch Churches in Batticaloa who are being internally displaced by the ongoing war

SMILE CENTRE

We have established a Smile Centre in Sri Lanka where we can care for those affected by the tsunami, with food, health care, education/job skills and child sponsorship and widow sponsorship. The feeding and educational projects now care for 186 children daily. Our Sponsored Trek Challenge in Sri Lanka in February 2007 raised over £12,000 for the work at the Centre.

In August 2006 Smile purchased a plot of land with buildings in Hambantota, not far from the building that we initially rented. As well as the main building, the Centre also has two shop fronts which open onto the street, which we have refurbished, and plan to use for the sale of craft items and an internet cafι and Christian bookshop. This will encourage self-sufficiency for both the Smile Centre and local needy families, as well as providing job skills training to give the children a brighter future. The Smile Centre has been up and running since September 2006 and is being used for:

  • Pre-school

  • After-school care

  • Feeding programme

  • Vocational training

  • Micro-financing projects

  • Team accommodation

The new block for accommodation, offices and bathrooms/toilets was completed in early 2007, enabling us to accommodate up to 20 people at the Smile Centre. We also completed the building of a new classroom block in August 2007. This building work has been made possible by the funds raised in our Sponsored Sri Lanka Trek in February 2007, as well a donations from supporters, and we would like to thank everyone involved for helping to bring these projects to fruition.

INTERNET CAFE & CHRISTIAN BOOKSHOP

The two rooms of the shop front were redecorated in spring 2008

We wish to establish this facility at the Smile Centre in Hambantota in order to reach out to the local community through providing a service which is not easily available in this remote corner of Sri Lanka. There is also no Christian bookshop in Hambantota or anywhere in the whole of the South East of the country that we are aware of. The following are needed to set up the project:

  • Three Pentium 4 computers – cost £350 each

  • Stock of Christian books and study materials – cost £1,000

  • Appropriate furniture, as well as tables, chairs and a painted sign, which can be made up by local craftsmen – cost £500

  • We need to employ a Manager with IT skills who would oversee the running of the shop from 9am to 9pm – cost approx £40 per month

If you, your church or group are able to help us establish this facility we would be pleased to hear from you. We know it will be a great outreach to the many people that live within the community.

SRI LANKAN CHRISTIAN CAMP 15-18 AUGUST

We have had a request from the Sri Lankan Baptist Union who are holding a Summer Christian Camp. They would like to take 250 children from rural churches on this special Holiday Bible Camp to enjoy a week away. To cover the cost of food, accommodation, travel, hire of hall, equipment etc, they urgently need approximately £10 per child, i.e. £2,500 – would you or your church like to sponsor a place for a child in order that they may enjoy this time away?

You can make your donations online at www.justgiving.com/smileint/donate marked "Sri Lankan Christian Camp 2008" or by post or phone as detailed on our Donations page. With only a short time to go before the Camp, your positive urgent response would be appreciated as soon as possible.

LONG-TERM PLANS

Our long-term aim is rehabilitation and reconstruction: to help people to rebuild their homes and lives, enabling them to provide for themselves, as well as providing ongoing care for orphans, widows and those without support. Our programme covers both Sri Lanka and India.

  • HOMES Building new homes for the many homeless families

  • BOATS Providing boats, nets, etc for fishermen. We will shortly be providing details of how your school/church or group can sponsor a boat and/or fishing equipment, in order to restore their livelihoods and rebuild local economies.

  • ORPHANS We wish to buy a plot of land and build an orphanage to provide care and shelter for the children, medical care, counselling, education and job creation. We will also be starting a child sponsorship scheme for the orphans.

  • TEAMS Sending out Smile ministry teams to work with children and families

  • TWINNING Church and school twinning: Smile would like to set up twinning arrangements and if you are interested in this, please contact the Smile office.

FINANCE

Ongoing financial donations are needed in order to continue our aid and rebuilding programme. Food, clothes and building materials can be bought in Sri Lanka, and this is the quickest and most cost-effective way of providing for these needs, as well as supporting the local economy:

  • £10 will feed a family for a week

  • £50-£100 will help buy the materials to build a new house

  • £1,000 will help to build an orphanage

Full details of how to make a donation are on the How To Help page.

PRISON WORK

Smile has also been working in Tangalle Prison where prisoners can be held on remand for up to seven years – often with their children. We have provided sewing machines so that women prisoners can make clothes for their families. We also provided a fridge, a television, paint to redecorate the medical wing and distributed food parcels to prisoners’ families in Tangalle and Hambantota.

We were asked by the prison Governor to build a Christian chapel in the prison where the prisoners can go to pray, and to help prisoners to learn English. We provided a brick-making press to provide employment for the men, who have now built and completed the chapel, which is in the centre of the compound.

We thank the Lord for this opportunity to demonstrate His love and care to the prisoners and their families.

NEW ORPHANAGE

Plans are also being made for the new orphanage which will be built within the existing large garden area.

This is being sponsored to a large extent by the Rosie May Memorial Fund (www.rosie-may.com) and we are grateful to them for their continued support and encouragement in the joint project.

We are also grateful to them for their generous donation towards the first year's running costs of the rented house which Smile used as its Centre during 2005-6.
