By leaving a legacy to Smile International you can carry on helping us, and the people we care for, after your passing. Legacies are an important source of income for us and you can be certain that in supporting the work of Smile International, your money will go to where the need is.

You can make a Will whenever you wish, or change your existing Will, but we do suggest that you use a solicitor to help draw up your Will to ensure that your exact wishes are carried out. Many people die without making a Will and this can be particularly hard on relatives and friends, who are struggling to cope after losing a loved one. Having to administer the estate of a person who has died intestate can be a long and laborious affair. Making a Will ensures that your loved ones and the causes that matter to you are taken care of after you have passed away.

You are never too old or too young to make a Will – but the sooner you can get around to it the better to ensure everything is in order. You may think that you don’t have much to leave, but when the value of your home and contents, bank and building society accounts and pension benefits are added up, you may be surprised by how much you do have! You will be pleased to hear that all legacies to charities are free of Inheritance and Capital Gains Tax too.

There are two main legacies that you can leave:

1. Residuary legacy – which is a share of the remainder of your estate after all other payments have been met
2. Pecuniary legacy – a fixed amount of money that has been specified in your Will.

Other types of legacy:

1. Specific gift legacy – If you choose, you can leave a specific gift legacy which allows you to leave anything in your possession from jewellery to property.
2. Reversionary legacy – A reversionary legacy allows you to leave a gift to a loved one for use during his or her lifetime, and then it will pass on to a specified person or charity after this time.

If you have already made a Will

If you have already made a Will but would like to leave a gift to Smile International, you can do so by making a simple addition to your existing Will. This is called a Codicil.
